What is HPL?

High Pressure Decorative Laminated Sheets — HPL, commonly called sunmica — are built from multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin, topped with a printed decorative layer and fused under high heat and pressure. That phenolic core is what makes the sheet hard, stable and durable. Artis makes HPL in three lines: the premium 1mm Artis, and the 0.8mm Woodrica and Artvio ranges, plus the 0.72mm Fine Decor economy line.

Questions, answered

Yes. Artis laminates are ISI-marked under BIS licence CM/L-9100141909 and conform to IS:2046-1995 Type S, the Indian Standard for decorative laminates.

IS:2046-1995 Type S — the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for high-pressure decorative laminates. Artis sheets are tested to and conform with its requirements.

Yes. As high-pressure laminates they withstand dry heat to 180 °C, boiling-water immersion, steam and staining, resist scratching (2 N) and pass the IS:2046 surface-wear test at 350 revolutions.

They are High Pressure Decorative Laminated Sheets (HPL, also called sunmica) — layers of kraft paper bonded with phenolic resin under high heat and pressure, finished with a printed decorative surface. The phenolic core gives the sheet its strength and dimensional stability.

Standard sheets are 8 × 4 ft (2440 × 1220 mm) across all lines — Artis 1MM at 1.0mm thickness, Woodrica and Artvio at 0.8mm, and Fine Decor at 0.72mm.

Thickness is held to a ±0.02 mm tolerance — and always on the plus side. A sheet rated 0.8mm or 1.0mm is never thinner than its rating; if it varies, it varies upward.

No — our sheets are engineered flat and we do not offer a post-forming grade. Use them on flat surfaces: shutters, panels, table tops and vertical faces.

Yes. Décor paper and resin are quality-controlled so a solid colour reordered later matches the earlier batch — shade consistency you can plan a phased project around.

Any quality wood-working adhesive works — Fevicol-grade synthetic resin adhesive is the industry standard. Apply evenly to both surfaces, press uniformly, and wipe any squeeze-out before it sets.

Every sheet is tested to IS:2046 Type S, including resistance to dry heat at 180 °C and to cigarette burns, and as a thermosetting phenolic laminate it does not melt or drip under heat the way plastic surfaces do. Standard decorative laminates — across the industry — are not fire-retardant rated; projects that specify a fire class need a dedicated fire-retardant grade with its own certification. If your project carries a fire specification, talk to us before ordering.

We don't manufacture edge banding, but matching edge bands are readily available in the market for practically every design — your dealer can arrange them, or contact us and we'll help you match one.

Artis carries the IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) green-product mark and is manufactured in India. A rooftop solar array supplies part of the plant's power.
